Botox® Cosmetic
BOTOX Cosmetic has a long and well-established safety history. While you may only know BOTOX Cosmetic as a wrinkle treatment it has actually been in use for over 18 years for the effective treatment of a range of medical conditions and is one of the most widely researched medicines in the world.
It is reassuring to know that BOTOX Cosmetic is the most popular physician-administered cosmetic treatment in North America with an estimated 16 million treatments performed since it was first approved. In addition, it has received a 97% satisfaction rating among users.
BOTOX Cosmetic is intended to enhance the way you look, not change it. When administered by an experienced physician, you can still smile, frown and animate. The treatment only relaxes the muscle beneath the lines at the point of injection, so the other elements of ferial expression remain active. It also has no effect on the sensory nerves, so you will have normal feeling in the treated areas.
BOTOX Cosmetic is not botulism. It is a purified protein and a finished medical prescription product proven to be very safe through extensive research and testing.
A BOTOX Cosmetic treatment is quick and simple. A very fine needle and small amount of liquid is used, so the pain associated the injection is minimal. No anesthetic is required, and you can resume normal activities immediately.
BOTOX Cosmetic is a technique-sensitive procedure. Make sure to visit a well-trained aesthetic-specialty physician for your treatment, and discuss the optimal results you would like to achieve. BOTOX Cosmetic should only be administered in appropriate medical settings.
The cost of BOTOX Cosmetic varies depending on the amount of product needed to achieve optimal results and the areas of the face that are being treated. As an example, BOTOX Cosmetic typically ranges from $300 to $500 to treat the frown lines between the eyebrows. Since the positive effects of a BOTOX Cosmetic treatment can last up to four months, the cost is about $3-$5 per day.
Then no scientific evidence that supports that creams work better than BOTOX Cosmetic. Creams work well on the surface of the skin. BOTOX Cosmetic works below the surface of the skin to relax the muscles that cause lines and wrinkles to form.
Unlike facial fillers, BOTOX Cosmetic doesn't fill in facial lines or restore volume loss. It relaxes the muscles underneath the skin that cause the lines. Facial fillers like Juvederm help to fill in facial lines and give back volume that is lost over time.
Many people may be surprised to know there are two types of BOTOX: BOTOX is used for the treatment of serious medical conditions, while BOTOX Cosmetic is used in much smaller dosages for the treatment of facial wrinkles and lines. BOTOX and BOTOX Cosmetic should not be confused as they are used to treat different conditions, using very different dosages.
BOTOX® Hyperhidrosis Treatment
Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating and when it occurs in the underarm skin it is called "axillary hyperhidrosis". This is caused by stimulation of the eccrine sweat glands by the nerve endings which are the final nerve pathways from higher centres in the brain. These nerves respond to different kinds of stress: emotional stress like intimate social situations or public speaking, or physical stress like the increased body temperature that comes with exercise or hot and humid weather.
Some people are routinely troubled by excessive sweating whilst others are only bothered when they are under emotional stress, physically active or over-heated. The nerves that control sweating depend upon a chemical transmitter called acetylcholine which is a molecule produced at the very ends of the nerve fibres. Botox is a genetically engineered neurotoxin which can, when injected into the skin, block the release of the acetylcholine to the sweat glands for months!
- People with problem underarm sweating
- Those working close to others such as hairstylists, nurses, dentists and hygienists, airline flight attendants, pilots and surgeons
- People working in hot conditions such as models, television newscasters and chefs
- People making public presentations such as executives, lawyers and salesmen
LaserFACIAL
Are you a candidate for a LaserFACIAL? The answer is "Yes" if your skin shows evidence of chronic exposure to the sun's ultraviolet light.
Physicians call this condition "photodamage", and the most obvious signs are coarsening of skin texture, irregular pigmentation, and enlarged blood vessels and pores.
LaserFACIAL treatment is the visible improvement of sun damaged skin through the use of laser technology to remove enlarged blood vessels and irregular pigmentation.
Before you decide on facial skin treatment, here are some things you should know about our lasers.
If you are over 30 years old and enjoy an active lifestyle your skin is probably showing signs of damage.
The LaserFACIAL works by focusing a beam of light to a target in the skin such as enlarged blood vessels and irregular chromophores. The enlarged vessels and irregularities are removed without scarring or damage to the treated or surrounding area.
Our lasers are capable of treating a wide variety of skin types.
Typically, several treatments are required for full-faced treatment. The average treatment takes about 15 minutes. Results may become apparent after the first few treatments.
There is some minor discomfort associated with the treatments. Most discomfort can be alleviated by cooling with a cold air system.
Side effects are minimal. Our lasers have been used since 1983 to treat port wine birthmarks and hemagniomas in infants as young as two days old as well as 20 other cosmetic conditions.
Results will vary but you should expect your skin to appear reddened. You can expect to return to your normal activities immediately with minimal precautions such as sunscreen.
Hair Removal
The laser emits a gentle beam of energy that passes through the skin to the hair follicle. The energy is then transformed into heat, which damages the follicle. The scientific principle called Thermokinetic Selectivity, (TKS) makes this method of hair removal particularly effective.
TKS makes it possible for laser energy to "select" only hair follicles, while sparing surrounding skin from damage. This brings the cosmetic results you want with the clinical results you need.
If you are concerned about unwanted hair, you are probably a good candidate for laser hair removal. Other factors can influence the treatment process, and are evaluated during your initial consultation.
Most patients describe the treatment as a series of slight pin pricks to the skin. Within about 30 minutes of treatment, the area may become pink or red, and this may last from a few hours to one day.
Hair grows in cycles. The laser only affects hair when it is in its early-growth phase. The laser will disable follicles that are actively producing hair at the time of treatment. At any time, some hair follicles are dormant. Repeat sessions will treat these follicles when they re-enter the growth phase.
Facial and Spider Veins
With a beam of light, the laser can deliver a prescribed dose of energy to the spider veins. The laser "selectively" coagulates the problem veins while sparing surrounding areas. After treatment, the vessel slowly and naturally disappears.
Results are seen within three to four weeks. Typically, one or two treatments are recommended.
This is something that must be determined with each patient individually, but the majority of patients will benefit from this treatment.
No. This non-invasive treatment process takes between 10 minutes to about 20 minutes, depending on your situation. After treatment, there is no down time – which means you can resume all of your normal activities immediately afterward.
There is some minor discomfort associated with this laser treatment. Most patients describe the sensation as a series of rubber band snaps to the skin. We can often reduce or eliminate this by cooling the treated area with our air-cooling device.
In addition to facial and leg spider veins, the laser can provide non-invasive skin treatments for healthier looking skin. It is also used to remove unwanted hair – even from patients who are not always good candidates for laser hair removal, such as those with darker or tanned.
Milia
- Genetics
- Heavy skin care products
- Lack of exfoliation
- Cumulative sun exposure
- Use products that are oil free
- Protect your skin from the sun
- Custom chemical peels
- Extractions (best done by a professional)
To exfoliate skin(remove dead skin cells) on a regular basis. Your skin needs to be kept thin and smooth as a preventative measure to try to control the Milia. An abundance of dead cells will promote Milia, so it is important to make sure your skin is exfoliated on a regular basis either chemically or manually. However, DO NOT OVER EXFOLIATE. You will know you are over exfoliating if you have the following symptoms:
- Sensitivity
- A rash like breakout
- Skin reddening
A skin care professional should perform the extractions. If they are not done properly, they can cause scarring.
Obagi Nu-Derm System - Corrective Therapy
As your skin ages, the turnover of skin cells slows significantly, throwing off the balance between the growth of healthy new skin cells and the sloughing off of old damaged skin cells. Collagen and elastin begin to slowly break down, causing the skin to lose its resilience, resulting in fine lines wrinkles and sagging.
Daily exposure to UV light accelerates this aging process and causes uneven pigmentation.
The system penetrates below your skin's surface, transforming skin cell functions at the cellular level and correcting the damage within your skin. Administered using a specific sequence of dosage and frequency that is right for your skin condition, the prescription-based system triggers a therapeutic cascade that makes your skin look and act younger and healthier.
If you've experienced sunburns, daily sun exposure, hormonal changes, stress and environmental pollution, then your skin will show signs of premature aging. Your genetic history may also make you more prone to the effects of aging skin. Developed for all skin types the Obagi Nu-Derm System#153; can be tailored to your skin care goals.
You can expect that your skin will undergo four phases of transformation!
Obagi-C System - Preventative Therapy
Those who have early photo damage, minimal wrinkles and lack of radiance.
Obagi Professional-C Serums - Antioxidants Therapy
Anyone who is concerned about early wrinkles, mild pigmentation and those with dry skins.
Sclerotherapy
A typical sclerotherapy session is relatively quick, lasting only about 15 to 45 minutes. After changing into shorts, your legs may be photographed for your medical records. You will be asked to lie down on the examination table and the skin over your spider veins will be cleaned with an antiseptic solution. Using one hand to stretch the skin taut, your doctor or nurse will begin injecting the sclerosing agent into the affected veins. Bright, indirect light and magnification help ensure that the process is completed with maximum precision.
Approximately one injection is administered for every inch of spider vein - anywhere from five to 40 injections per treatment session. A cotton ball and compression tape is applied to each area of the leg as it is finished.
During the procedure, you may listen to music, read, or just talk to your practitioner. You will be asked to shift positions a few times during the process. As the procedure continues, you will feel small needle sticks and possibly a mild burning sensation. However, the needle used is so thin and the sclerosing solution is so mild that pain is usually minimal.
Sclerotherapy generally does not require any recovery period. You will usually be able to walk immediately after the treatment but should take it easy for a day or two. While bed rest is not recommended, you may need to avoid strenuous exercise for a few days after sclerotherapy.
You will probably have to wear compression stockings after having sclerotherapy. Doctors disagree on how long a person needs to wear the stockings after having treatment. Some think that several weeks is necessary, but others think a few days is enough.
It's not uncommon to experience some cramping in the legs for the first day or two after the injections. This temporary problem usually doesn't require medication.
You should be aware that your treated veins or spider veins will look worse before they begin to look better.
Although you probably won't want to wear any leg-baring fashions for about two weeks, your activity will not be significantly limited in any other way from sclerotherapy treatment.
You will be encouraged to walk to prevent clots from forming in the deep veins of the legs. However, during the period of time to complete your treatment program, prolonged sitting and standing should be avoided, as should squatting, heavy weight lifting and "pounding" type exercises, including jogging. A one-month healing interval must pass before you may have your second series of injections in the same site. After each treatment, you will notice further improvement of your legs' appearance.
Women of any age may be good candidates for sclerotherapy, but most fall in the 30-to-60 category. In some women, spider veins may become noticeable very early on - in the teen years. For others, the veins may not become obvious until they reach their 40s.
Spider veins in men aren't nearly as common as they are in women. Men who do have spider veins often don't consider them to be a cosmetic problem because the veins are usually concealed by hair growth on the leg. However, sclerotherapy is just as effective for men who seek treatment.
- If you are pregnant or nursing. It is not known whether the chemical (sclerosant) causes birth defects or problems with breast milk.
- If you have a history of allergy to sclerosant or similar substances.
- If you have ave blood clots or inflammation in the deep leg veins (deep vein thrombosis).
Sclerotherapy costs less than surgery, requires no hospital stay, and allows a quicker return to work and normal activities. It reduces symptoms and improves appearance of the skin in 85% of people who have smaller varicose veins. Outcomes are not yet known for newer sclerotherapy techniques but appear promising.
The risks of sclerotherapy include:
- Skin colour changes along the treated vein. This is the most common side effect of sclerotherapy. The discoloration may take 6 to 12 months to disappear. In some people, it may be permanent.
- Recurring varicose veins.
- Itching, bruising, pain, and blistering where the veins were treated.
- Scarring resulting from ulcers or death of the tissue around the treated vein (skin or fat necrosis) if sclerosant is injected outside a vein or sclerosant escapes through the wall of a weakened vein.
- A mild or severe (anaphylactic) reaction to the sclerosant. (Severe reaction is very rare but can be life-threatening).
- Blood clots or damage in the deep vein system.
Most patients are pleased with the difference sclerotherapy makes. The skin of your legs will appear younger, clearer and more healthy-looking. If you've been wearing long skirts and slacks to hide your spider veins, you'll now be able to broaden your fashion horizons. Often, patients are surprised at the dramatic difference in appearance between a treated leg and an untreated one.
Although sclerotherapy will obliterate the noticeable veins for good, it's important to remember that treatment will not prevent new spider veins from emerging in the future. As time passes, you may find that you need "touch-ups" or full treatments for new veins that surface. But even if you choose not to have further sclerotherapy, your legs will look better than if you never had treatment at all.
Before you decide to have sclerotherapy, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with your doctor.
Latisse®
LATISSE® solution is a prescription treatment for hypotrichosis used to grow eyelashes, making them longer, thicker and darker.
Hypotrichosis is another name for having inadequate or not enough eyelashes.
It's a story of how one great product led to another. In 2001, Allergan developed a medicated eye drop used to treat ocular hypertension. Then, a side effect was discovered — patients began growing longer, fuller and darker lashes. This led Allergan to study the active ingredient in this other product, and after a clinical trial, LATISSE® was born, earning its FDA approval in December 2008.
LATISSE® is believed to affect the growth (anagen) phase of the eyelash hair cycle in two ways: first, it increases the length of this phase; and second, it increases the number of hairs in this growth phase. The exact way it works is unknown.
The LATISSE® clinical study was conducted at 16 sites across the country and included 278 participants, featuring women and men of various ages (22 to 78), backgrounds and eye colors. Throughout the course of the 16-week treatments, each participant was photographed and evaluated at 4-week intervals (week 0 to week 16) for differences in their overall lash prominence, including elements of length, thickness and fullness. At 16 weeks, the results showed that LATISSE® was effective for 78% of those participating, versus 18% for the vehicle group. Vehicle is the same as LATISSE®, without its active ingredient.
LATISSE® users may start to see longer lashes at 4 weeks, with full growth at 16 weeks. The growth is gradual over time.
LATISSE® solution is a once-a-day treatment you apply yourself each evening to the base of the upper eyelashes. DO NOT APPLY in your eye or to the lower lid, because excess hair growth outside the treatment area may occur.
The clinical studies of LATISSE® were conducted on patients who applied the product to the base of their upper lashes only. DO NOT APPLY in your eye or to the lower lid. There is the potential for hair growth to occur in areas where LATISSE® solution comes in repeated contact with the skin surface. It is important to apply LATISSE® only to the skin of the upper eyelid margin at the base of the eyelashes using the accompanying sterile applicators, and to carefully blot any excess LATISSE® from the eyelid margin to avoid its running onto the cheek or other skin areas.
If you miss an application, or a few, don't try to catch up. Just apply the LATISSE® treatment the next evening and stay on schedule.
To achieve the full effect of LATISSE®, you will need to use the product daily for 16 weeks. After that point, you can talk to your doctor about ongoing use.
Contact lens wearers can use LATISSE®. They need to remove their lenses before applying the solution and can reinsert their contacts 15 minutes afterwards.
Yes. In its first year alone, approximately 1.5 million bottles of LATISSE® were prescribed.
The most common side effects after using LATISSE® solution are an itching sensation in the eyes and/or eye redness. This was reported in approximately 4% of patients. LATISSE® solution may cause other less common side effects which typically occur on the skin close to where LATISSE® is applied, or in the eyes. These include skin darkening, eye irritation, dryness of the eyes, and redness of the eyelids.
If you develop a new ocular condition (e.g., trauma or infection), experience a sudden decrease in visual acuity, have ocular surgery, or develop any ocular reactions, particularly conjunctivitis and eyelid reactions, you should immediately seek your physician's advice concerning the continued use of LATISSE® solution.
LATISSE® solution is intended for use on the skin of the upper eyelid margins at the base of the eyelashes. Refer to the illustration below. DO NOT APPLY to the lower eyelid. If you are using other products in the same class for elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), or if you have a history of abnormal IOP, you should only use LATISSE® under the close supervision of your physician.
LATISSE® use may cause darkening of the eyelid skin which may be reversible. LATISSE® use may also cause increased brown pigmentation of the colored part of the eye which is likely to be permanent.
It is possible for hair growth to occur in other areas of your skin that LATISSE® frequently touches. Any excess solution outside the upper eyelid margin should be blotted with a tissue or other absorbent material to reduce the chance of this from happening. It is also possible for a difference in eyelash length, thickness, fullness, pigmentation (darkness), number of eyelash hairs, and/or direction of eyelash growth to occur between eyes (e.g. results may vary for each eye). These differences, should they occur, will usually go away if you stop using LATISSE®.
LATISSE® solution is an ophthalmic drug product. If any gets into the eye, it is not expected to cause harm. The eye does not need to be rinsed.
Do not use LATISSE® solution if you are allergic to one of its ingredients.
Active ingredient: bimatoprost
Inactive ingredients: benzalkonium chloride; sodium chloride; sodium phosphate, dibasic; citric acid; and purified water. Sodium hydroxide and/or hydrochloric acid may be added to adjust pH. The pH during its shelf life ranges from 6.8 - 7.8.
This is a condition where the pressure inside the eye is higher than normal. LATISSE® may decrease IOP. So talk to your doctor if you are using IOP-lowering medications. Concurrent administration of LATISSE® and certain IOP-lowering medications in ocular hypertensive patients should be closely monitored for changes in intraocular pressure.
Eye redness may occur immediately after use. Consult your doctor if the redness persists or you notice other symptoms as well. If you develop a new eye condition (e.g. trauma or infection), experience a sudden decrease in visual acuity, have eye surgery, or develop any eye reactions, particularly conjunctivitis and eyelid reactions, you should immediately seek your physician's advice concerning the continued use of LATISSE®.

Increased brown iris pigmentation has occurred when the same formulation of bimatoprost ophthalmic solution was instilled directly into the eye to treat elevated intraocular pressure. Although iris pigmentation was not reported in clinical studies with LATISSE®, patients should be advised about the potential for increased brown iris pigmentation which is likely permanent.
LATISSE® solution is applied topically, along the skin of the upper eyelashes. It is not intended for use in the eyes, but if some solution gets into your eye, you do not need to rinse it.
No. LATISSE® works gradually over the 16-week treatment period. Use of LATISSE® more than once a day will not increase the growth of eyelashes. Please follow the directions, as instructed by your doctor.
LATISSE® received its FDA approval in December 2008, after a team of 16 experienced doctors from all over the country conducted clinical studies. LATISSE® is from Allergan, a specialty pharmaceutical company. Approximately 1.5 million kits of LATISSE® have been sold.
LATISSE® is an ophthalmic solution. If any solution gets into the eye, it is not expected to cause harm. You do not need to rinse your eyes. LATISSE® is not an eye drop. DO NOT APPLY in your eye or to the lower lid.
LATISSE® is the first and only FDA-approved prescription treatment for inadequate or not enough lashes, growing them longer, fuller and darker.
No. LATISSE® does not work in place of mascara. LATISSE® is a solution treatment for inadequate or not enough lashes and requires a prescription from a doctor. However, mascara can be used on your eyelashes in addition to LATISSE®.
If you stop using LATISSE®, your eyelashes are expected to return to their previous appearance over several weeks to months.
LATISSE® solution is a prescription treatment for hypotrichosis used to grow eyelashes, making them longer, thicker and darker.
Eyelash hypotrichosis is another name for having inadequate or not enough eyelashes.
If you are using, or have used, prescription products for any eye pressure problems, only use LATISSE® under close doctor care. Although not seen in LATISSE® clinical studies, may cause increased brown pigmentation of the colored part of the eye which is likely permanent. Eyelid skin darkening may occur which may be reversible. Only apply at the base of the upper eyelashes. DO NOT APPLY to the lower eyelid. Hair growth may occur in other skin areas that LATISSE® solution frequently touches. If you develop or experience any eye problems or have eye surgery, consult your doctor immediately about continued use of LATISSE®. The most common side effects after using LATISSE® solution are itchy eyes and/or eye redness. If discontinued, lashes will gradually return to their previous appearance.
